The University Medical Center Freiburg is a highly respected teaching hospital in Germany, offering a comprehensive range of healthcare services. The medical center has 1,600 beds across more than 110 wards, and its outpatient clinics see over 300,000 patients annually.
Founded alongside the University of Freiburg in 1457, it is one of the oldest universities in Europe. The first hospital building was constructed in the 19th century, with a wing dedicated specifically to psychiatry in 1887. Although the central complex was destroyed during World War II, it has been fully rebuilt and modernized. Today, the hospital employs around 10,000 staff members, including approximately 1,200 physicians, 2,800 nurses, and 550 active apprentices at any given time.
The hospital has historically been at the forefront of European medical science, performing the first successful heart-lung transplant in Europe and the first laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy in Germany in 2010. Training programs at the hospital focus on nursing, physiotherapy, midwifery, and pediatric nursing, making it a cornerstone for medical education in the region.
